San Francisco's KPIX Deploys SAN Solutions' Video Production SAN

Network Storage System Supports Station's 'Eye On The Bay' Program

LAS VEGAS — March 16, 2010 — SAN Solutions, Inc., a media infrastructure company that provides storage and application platforms to the media and entertainment markets, today announced that its Video Production SAN is being used by San Francisco television station KPIX to enable file-based production of its Emmy® Award-winning HD news magazine show, "Eye On The Bay."

KPIX implemented the first phase of SAN Solutions' network storage within its graphics department in 2007 and then chose to put the company's Video Production SAN at the heart of a new file-based production environment for "Eye On The Bay." The Video Production SAN is designed to give writers, editors, and producers fast, convenient, simultaneous access to media and allows broadcasters like KPIX to establish a more collaborative workflow.

"Our Video Production SAN offers valuable technology integration that meets the budget and real-time performance requirements of customers such as KPIX, serving as a scalable, extensible system upon which the station can continue to build its tapeless operations," said SAN Solutions President Harry Aine. "With the Video Production SAN tied into its graphics storage, the 'Eye On The Bay' team enjoys one cohesive and reliable production infrastructure, backed by our integration expertise and extensive support program."

Content can be moved from cameras to storage quickly, and a centralized storage system allows writers and producers to instantly access, log, and arrange story content from their desktops, leaving more time for the creative process. Production teams can work on multiple segments in parallel, as opposed to the serial workflow dictated by a tape-based production system. For example, producers at their own desktops can access proxy versions of video as soon as it is transferred to the SAN. Editors then simply drag and drop the producers' video sequences directly into their Final Cut timeline to perform finishing on associated high-resolution content and assemble the completed show.

Integration of the SAN Solutions' Video Production SAN with CatDV logging software makes it easy for producers to add metadata to media, and integration with iNews supports the building and storage of scripts for each segment. Through every step of production, the Video Production SAN maintains a single instance of media, saving storage space and also ensuring that everyone is working with the correct version of content and graphics.
